The Brown Exploding Organ Quartet

Organised by Matt & Phred's Jazz Club
Artists include: Steve Brown, Ian Dickson, Luke Flowers, Neil Yates

Origionally from Leeds/Harrogate I was led into jazz via a schools jazz band.I studied at Leeds College of music but really started learning my craft when I left and started gigging for a living.

I have been living in Manchester for over six years enjoying the extraordinary depth of the scene. In my opinion, Manchester has the worlds best drummers, which has proved formative in my development on the organ (with bass).

Luke Flowers and I met on a gig over ten years ago and we have been playing together ever since. Luke is like a compote of the finest drumming ingredients, the hipness of Philly-Joe with the texture of Elvin, he is a constantly expanding musician, not to mention being the engine of the Cinematic Orchestra.

This Project is in the area of Larry Young's 60's blue note quartet with Elvin Jones, Joe Henderson and Woody Shaw. It features Neil Yates on trumpet and some of his compositions. He has a strong affinity for the 60's era where melodic abstraction is set against deep rythmic flow as ancient as Africa. The jazz movement of that era had finished claiming its' (rightful) intellectual legitimacy and was aiming for something more eternal- Nice!

"One of Clitheroe's finest exports, Iain Dixon is reet good " SB
