Dave Tomkins Bowline Ensemble

Organised by Matt & Phred's Jazz Club
Artists include: Richard Illes, Stuart McCallum, Dave Tomkins, Dave Walsh

The band was formed in March 2002; primarily to play the compositions of David Tompkins, combined with less frequently played pieces by composers such as Mark Helias, William Parker, John Zorn and Sun Ra. The line-up reunites Richard Iles with David Tompkins and Dave Walsh who previously played together in Mike Hope’s JazzMaHoot. The fourth member, Stuart McCallum, adds a vast array of colours to this already well-knitted trio. The music reflects the varied interests and influences of the four members, creating an exciting mixture of strong rhythmic momentum with intense experimental exploration and hymn-like lyricic Richard Iles was a regular member of The Creative Jazz Orchestra and has played with Evan Parker, Herb Robinson, Bill Frissell, Marty Erlich, Iain Dixon and Kenny Wheeler. He leads various bands including a big band with Andy Schofield. Stuart McCallum has recorded and toured UK with Manchester funk band Future Shock and John Ellis’ Big Bang. He has also played in Don Weller’s Relapse, Neil Yates’ Creed and has just played with Geoff Gascoyne at the 606 Club, in London, and John Surman at the Marsden Jazz Festival. David Tompkins is currently a member of Mike Hope’s Jazzmahoot, the Gary Boyle Quartet, Orchestra Timbala & RSL. He has also toured Europe with blues band, The Moochers. Past bands also include Kevin Davy’s D’Semble, Nat Birchall’s Sixth Sense, Segun’s Time & Basil Clarke (ex- Yargo). He has also played with Byron Wallen, Dave O’Higgins & Julian Arguelles.
